Palaye Royale Review Nov. 21st, 2018

Palaye Royale
Nov. 21st, 2018
Skyway Theatre, Minneapolis MN

I've seen Palaye Royale twice now. They were an important band for me to see at Warped Tour this year, and I was able to meet them then. They put a lot of heart into what they do and put on crazy energetic performances.

They released their second studio album this summer and were on tour to promote Boom Boom Room Side B. Their sound and look is comparable to My Chemical Romance. They have stories to their songs, and they carry the melodic chaos similar to The Black Parade. Their look is more 2004 emo, which is appreciated this late in 2018.

The venue was a rather small, cozy, club setting. I have been in the Skyway Theatre's main room, but we were in their side room for this show. There were lots of cozy places to sit and watch and chandeliers giving a great ambiance, but plenty of room to stand and dance and enjoy the show. Palaye Royale and the opening bands did a good job of getting the room's attention, especially for being such small bands right now.

I know they had to cancel a show in Canada on this tour, and I don't blame them. The boys put on twitter that they had been battling illness on and off all tour. Kudos to Remington Leigh, their lead singer, for putting on the show I saw. I went with my brother and boyfriend, and my brother could see that after almost every song Remington was running off stage real quick and then coming back for the next one. After the show, they announced that they would not be doing an encore because Remington was getting sick between songs. To make up for it, the other band mates said that they would be meeting fans afterwards. It was my boyfriend's first proper emo concert, and he was feeling overwhelmed so we left instead of being able to meet the members again.

They played about 11 of their most popular songs. Some that really stood out were 'Mr. Doctor Man', 'You'll Be Fine', and 'Teenage Heartbreak Queen', along with a personal favorite of mine, 'Ma Cherie'. They also performed a couple songs that are not on official recording yet: 'Masochist' and 'F*ck with my Head'. Hopefully they will be recorded one day for us to enjoy anytime.

The opening bands were Dead Posey and BONES (UK). I really enjoyed both of them. I listened to some of their songs ahead of time to prepare for the concert. Both of them have only released a handful of songs, but it was nice hearing a full discography and a cover too from BONES (UK) of David Bowie's 'I'm Afraid of Americans'. Dead Posey has a sound reminiscent of Janis Joplin that was refreshing to hear. They are very much a rock band through and through and are very easy to listen to. They only have one EP out now, but they are working on their first full length. BONES (UK) was rather inspirational. Both opening bands are fronted by women, which is nice to see in the scene. BONES (UK) wanted to make a statement and talked to the crowd about "women power", more or less, but the message was more about not being afraid to look different and not to conform to beauty standards, to not be afraid of who you wish to love, and to not be afraid to stand up for yourself if you don't like the politics going on in your country. They were both exceptional performances, and both opening bands were meeting fans after their sets were over, which is a great way to gather a fanbase.

Overall, I recommend all the bands that performed. Palaye Royale are one of my new favorite bands, and I am very excited to see them keep true to themselves and their artsy nature. Dead Posey has a very refreshing 1980's/1990's rock sound that is very easy to listen to and get into. Finally, BONES (UK) are making great music and spreading a great message to their fans, and to anyone that happens to be in the room with them at the time.
